This enables me to capture high resolution black and whites. The files are enormous, around 100Mb. This capability helps me to ‘see’ in black and white before any image capture takes place. There are three main areas to see here, the tall gilded statue of Bhudda, the 3,000 year old quarry and the Lotus ponds. Each of these is beautiful in it’s own way. The statue of Bhudda and associated large temple have a steady stream of people coming to pray and worship and are a source of comfort to many. The ancient quarry has now become one very large garden and is a place that on it’s own can consume your whole day. I have spent many hours walking, photographing and taking in the beauty here. The rock that was quarried here is a dark pink which, over the years has become stained with browns and greens from the vegetation growing on and around it. The Lotus ponds are a delight. There are many species of Lotus on display and they all seem to have their own character. Most are beautiful, some look decidedly scruffy. The exhibition on at the time was a history of art dating from very early on in man’s history to the modern day. Our tour was interspersed with live monologues portrayed by some of the museum staff, something I’ve never experienced before and was quite different. Some of the exhibits were breathtaking while others were just simply delightful. A lot of the smaller exhibits were displayed very nicely in large Perspex cases. The images I captured of these turned out surprisingly well despite this. Unfortunately, I was so preoccupied with my photography, I neglected to note the titles and dates of the pieces-my apologies. The exhibits were laid out as a timeline, the first room being home to the more ancient exhibits generally native to the Middle East, continuing into classic European pieces by the likes of Monet and ending with a room housing present day modern art. The museum itself is designed to be very plain and simple. All the walls are white and featureless, but the use of glass, light and water transform the space into a cool and elegant backdrop for the exhibits. The entire building was erected adjacent to the shoreline and the sea is an integral part of the whole. There is almost as much to see outside as in. As we were driving away and able to see the building from a distance it appeared that the design was inspired by a Taqiyah. The Taqiyah is a white cap with some lace work on the crown, often worn by Arab men. I wish I’d noticed this earlier and been able to capture a few shots. Next time. Synonymous with being one of the top Alpha predators, cunning, savage and daunting. Known for centuries for terrifying villages. Unapproachable, aloof. Maybe… One day a couple of years ago, my daughter said we were going to some wetlands she knew of to photograph the wildfowl there. We drove for over an hour and no sign of any wetlands or wildfowl. a little later she announced that we were almost there, still no wetland, just prairie. She eventually turned into what appeared to be a farm except that all the animals were howling. (I later found out that they were announcing our arrival) Wolves! Lots of them. A lifelong dream realized. I could not wipe the grin off my face. My daughter said ‘ gotcha dad!’ Did she ever. We walked up to the gate and were welcomed by Sally Jo. What followed can only be described as one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. She took us on a guided tour of the facility and we met all the residents. Some we could get up close and personal with as long as we followed some basic rules. Having a wolf come up to you and smell and lick your face, so he can sense you, is truly a humbling event. I felt an immediate connection. A few of them sensed that. Sally said they read your aura, and I believe her. It was all I could do to stay on the right side of the fence on that first visit, I just wanted to be with them. My daughter and I went again in the winter and we got to run with a pack of four wolves in the small woods at the facility. My camera was glued to a wolf called Sparta. I barely recognized him from the lean, leggy guy he’d been in the summer. He was magnificent.
